The South End Art Hop is Vermont’s largest visual art event. In its 19th year, the two-day event occurs on the weekend following the Labour Day holiday and attracts over 30,000 visitors and hosts more than 500 participating artists.

During the South End Art Hop, Galerie Maison Kasini (Kasini House’s Canadian sister company) presents “Montreal Contemporary Art,” an exhibition of artwork from Montreal.

The purpose of the exhibition is to generate enthusiasm for Quebec art, to promote Montreal as an art destination, and to foster dialogue and connection between the two communities.

The exhibition is presented with support from L’Association des galeries d’art contemporain (AGAC) and Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC). The two-day event will take place on Friday, September 9th and Saturday, September 10th.

Here's a commission I just completed. It's pretty large (60" x 40"). I really enjoyed painting it because it forced me to paint outside of my usual style. The paint is really thick in parts. The bird I was considering never made it in to the final piece because it wasn't necessary.

Here's another close-up shot of my fall painting. It's starting to really come together so I get to have more fun with it now.

The more I painted, the more I realised I had to stick an animal in there somewhere. I thought a swallow might be nice so I sketched it out last night. They've usually begun their migration by the time the leaves change so it's nice to take this kind of artistic liberty.

I wish I was on the other side of the pond for this one. Dante's Inferno is one of my favorite literary pieces. It has inspired a few works in the past, but I always ended up painting over them at a later time. The book can really bring out some of the darkest aspects of one's personality and give a face to inner demons seldom acknowledged.

The labyrinth of tunnels beneath London's Waterloo station have been converted into a large-scale evocation of Dante's Inferno. Opening tomorrow, Hell's Half Acre is an impressively creepy and comprehensive installation.

How Printing Ink Is Made

This is a really nice video that shows how printing ink is made. I personally never wondered how it was done. Ink is just one of those things that I guess we take for granted. The video's beautifully filmed and set to one of my favorite Beethoven pieces. It gives an idea of the kind of craftsmanship and precision involved in the process.

These Old Documentaries Are Great

Here's a short documentary I found on the Nation Film Board website about Frederick Varley. It's a very personal and dramatic approach to describing this member of the Group of Seven. In fact, the music is a bit over the top and the narrator is strangely eerie. I sort of felt like I was watching Psycho at one point. I love these old docs. There's something about them...

Walton Ford is an artist I only discovered this past year. In searching for references for a painting online, I came across what is still my favorite piece by him: "Falling Bough", painted in 2002.

It's a huge watercolor painting. I tried to upload a big enough photo so that you can see some of the incredible details if you click for a larger view. Here are some other of his works:

I was also happy to discover that he regularly frequents the American Museum of Natural History for references. I think that place is one of the coolest places on the planet. I would move to NYC just to be near it. Here are a few chapters from an episode of ART:21 about humor in art, where they interview Walton Ford and he discusses some of his methods:

Lately, I've been having trouble with painters. I'm having a very difficult time finding paintings that stimulate me in any sort of way. I've noticed a sort of laissez-faire in what's deemed as important these days.. like the artist doesn't really care what they put on canvas. Also, the opposite it true. So much work is put into the idea behind the painting that the act of painting itself is left to suffer. One can't put on canvas exactly what's in one's mind because it is, in itself, its own language. It is a way of communicating without words.

One of the painters I admire the most is Francis Bacon. It should be said, however, that I admire him for his work and his views on painting since he was definitely mad as a hatter. I wasn't prepared for when I finally stood in front of his works at the MOMA in New York. I wasn't prepared for the intensity, nor the importance of the glass he always places in front of his paintings. I really believe he is truly great.

Here is an interview I found on YouTube that took place in 1966. I can relate strongly to his views on his work, but also on painting in general. I also find that it is a good example of critics looking for meaning and story where there is none.

I started a new commission. I can't just seem to paint it for what it is. I'm at the point where I'm trying to find a way to make it my own before proceeding. I've been to this swamp on many occasions, most recently on a midnight snowshoeing trek under a full moon. I see this place in a certain way, I just have to try and convey it. I've got some ideas. We'll see how they play out...

Art Subscription MTL Launch!!!

This Thursday is the Montreal launch of Papirmasse, an art subscription I publish. It's a project that began this past January with the goal of making art as cheap and accessible as possible. For $5 a month (ie. $60 for the year, plus shipping) you get a signed and limited edition print in the mail every month!

We've turned one of the studios at the 100 Sided Die into a store. If you don't know about the Die, well, it's basically a huge shared studio in the Mile End. Tons of artists share the space, so there's a real variety of work. But our store is only open one day a month, so don't miss it!
